Why Darren doesn’t play poker…

Several days ago I lost my wedding ring when I took it off to work out and put it somewhere “obvious” –no doubt. I’ve been pretty disturbed about it and tonight I started the search once again after whining for Darren’s help he got in on the search.

“I THINK I tossed it into one of our drawers.” I told him. A few minutes later he comes out of our closet…

“So, you tossed it into a drawer somewhere you think? What will you give me if I find it?”

Now I know that he found it.

Me: “You found it! Where was it?”

Darren: “I didn’t say I found it. I said ‘what will you GIVE ME if I find it?’”

Me: “Where was it? Where was it?”

Darren: “What will you give me?”

Me: “Okay, fine, anything. Now tell me where it was.”

Darren shows me where it is. (In a shot glass on the dresser in our closet.)

See, now that must be why Darren never plays poker with the guys. He’s just too honest. Too obvious. He can’t hide anything or tell any kind of a lie. He says it’s cause he doesn’t like to lose any money, and he IS pretty tight with the wad (yes I appreciate that), but I think it’s just that he knows he can’t bluff.

Darren always says he’s handicapped cuz he wears all his thoughts on his face. He does have some pretty honest facial expressions. When we were first dating we spent a couple hours every day playing basketball, usually full court with two 5-7 man teams. (Man, those were the days, remember those Mike, Steve, Danny, Jerry, Andrew, dad, Juan, Ange?) I loved playing with him, I could read every play on his face so I almost always knew exactly when he was going to drive, dunk or pass. He always seemed to not mind if the team fell behind, then he’d get this look on his face and I just knew it was hopeless, whatever he was going to do next he was going to score by it. I called that his “hopeless” look.

It’s one of the many, many things I love about him. He’s just one of the most sincere people I have ever known. He never has an angle (White Christmas). He’s just always real and true and honest. He never says things he doesn’t mean and I’ve never heard him give a compliment that wasn’t sincere. I think the Lord would say of Darren as he did of Nathaniel. “Behold a man in whom there is no guile.”

Anyway, this isn’t to say I don’t think you’d be great at poker, honey, you’d probably win. Just, only when you really do have a good hand. :-)

  1. Mike Says:

Only playing when you have a good hand is a solid money-making strategy.

Not for me! Someone else always has a better one…

I know what you mean, Maria. I have the worst luck in the world. Ask everyone who knows me. Even my inlaws. Even everything I buy or get has SOMETHING wrong with it (except, of course, my dear wife and newborn daughter ). Forget gambling…too much bad karma in me or something.

And, Darren, my condolences on tonights losses…

Oh that was such a sweet post, man it makes me feel guilty for not saying nicer things about my man, (A man in whom there is no guile!!! That is some awsome stuff–GBY)
