Cool Devotions Books for Kids

I found these books that I’m pretty thrilled with. I’m usually pretty picky about this kind of stuff. So many devotional books are just not worth it compared to good old Bibles. But I found these because my kids really needed variety and more material to read in their devotions. These books have been a real hit and are making family time and reading together fun. They’ve caught the kids interest and frankly I’m pretty impressed with the way spiritual principles are presented and deep things are explained on kid levels.

Three different ones:

God’s Might Warrior Devotional Bible: This one is really great for boys! I think maybe ages 3 on up to 7 or 8 or so. It’s got a good mix of almost pure scripture, Bible stories and examples, things to really think about, questions, application and some good explanations on spiritual warfare and things of that nature. It’s all-boy oriented, very fun.

Beginning with God: This one is really a great book. I was very surprised. It covers a lot of topics that come up in life that I’m sure my kids would or will ask me about one day and that I wouldn’t know how to cover so well myself. Topics like divorce and how kids feel about it, negative peer pressure, honesty, using bad words or language, etc. It’s all very “REAL” stuff from real life.

I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re uncomfortable talking with your kids about deep or complicated issues or feel they are too young to know about some of these things because this book does seem to provoke thought and conversation. Or maybe you’d rather read it with older kids only. My take on it is that I’d rather read and talk about it with them before they see and experience it in real life, either their own experiences or what they hear from friends and peers and adult conversations going on around them. I remember being aware of many somewhat intense social issues at a young age while my parents had no idea I knew about them.

As we’ve started to read these stories with our kids we’ve had some very deep talks and we’ve found out that they DO know and are aware of a lot of things and quite a few social issues that we thought or hoped they were still somewhat blissfully unaware of. It’s been good though. Reading through it, the kid have brought up a lot of questions they have about things we might not talk about otherwise and they would probably tend to just figure out on their own at some point and draw their own conclusions. I like to hear their questions and like to be able to talk about them with them.

This book gives some really good stories and examples that are very Bible/Word based on how to react to them, understand them and deal with them.I haven’t read the whole book yet so I can’t say I embrace it all, every page, but I do like it. So far I’m impressed with the book and impressed with the results.

Heroes for Young Readers:This is a series on missionaries and greats who gave their lives to the Lord’s service. The text is in poem form so that’s a little more for older kids 5 or 6 on up, but the pictures are pretty good and I have paraphrased them for Emmer who’s 3 years, and he likes them okay.

It’s been tremendous studying the lives of missionaries and all the endured and went through. Following their progress, set backs, hardships, failures and success. It’s really strengthened my faith right along with the kids.

I also got Evan a couple of paperbacks which are much more thorough and detailed. Better for older kids. And I got him one book from the popular Trailblazer series. He hasn’t read that one yet, but I’ll see how he likes it. The other paperbacks are a hit.

I’m a real hands-on touchy-feely type when it comes to books. I like to look at and hold them, leaf through them, etc, before I decide to buy them. I don’t really like buying books online for that reason. So I got these at the Christian book store after poring over the shelves and looking through about 100 books. But you might be able to find them online cheaper or used, etc.

Thanks for the reviews on these books. I’m like that about books too, I have to see them first before I buy! Now being overseas, I have to rely on others recommendations on books.
