For Better or Worse –Through the Eyes of a Child

We attended a wedding today. It was a fun, very fun, and a unique experience. Partly, I think, because it was a double wedding and Jason and Andrew are both musicians, and musicians are always unique. Which brings me to another point, I’m not sure how. But anyway, –the wives of musicians are always absolutely wonderful women, amazing wives, and great mothers. I’m not sure why there is such karma for musicians when it comes to marriage, but it surely exists, and I can prove it like this: Joni of Vas, Liz of Chris, April of Mike, Debbie of Tim, Spring of Godfrey, Mimi of Jonas (Jason), Esther of NTL, Renee of Eli, Margie of Jerry, Nadia of Justin, Claire of Pedro, and now…Liz of Andrew and Clara of Jason. I’m sure that at this late hour I’ve forgotten at least a few more that I know personally. Need I go on?

It’s not Darren’s fault that he never learned music. ;-)

Well, though we’ve been to a few weddings since our children (Juan and Angela’s, Sam and Tammy’s, Duane and Danni’s) this one was especially fun to attend with them and to get to see a bit of it through their eyes.  For the last few days when we’d talk about going to the wedding Emmer would tell me that he wanted to go but that he didn’t want it to be a wedding. I was kind of thinking somewhere in the back of my very busy mind “What’s up with that?” and I had a little heartbreak when I found out today:

During the ceremony he kept asking me why it was a wedding and I kept explaining it was because Jason loved Clara and wanted to marry her and Andrew loved Liz and wanted to marry her. After the ceremony had finished and Emmer had sat pretty quietly through it, we were waiting for the evening dinner for a space of time, so I took Emmer somewhere to rest for a bit. That’s when he confided in me. “Mommy, I didn’t want it to be a wedding today because I thought that I was going to get married. –And I didn’t want to get married!” Then he added, “Because I’m just a kid!” –Poor baby! Yes, don’t worry! I poured out the reassurances that mommy and daddy would never take him off to a wedding to get married, and that it was fine to wait until he was forty.

Ella was following every detail of the wedding events and my sister, Michelle, and I were explaining each part and tradition to her. She was taking it all in, in wondrous, loving amazement, until the one point when the grooms shook up some champagne and sprayed the crowd in a New Year’s style celebration. Ella watched wide-eyed and then said in horror “Now every body will smell like STINKY BEER!”   –I’m amazed at her thoughts on beer. Hmmm…

While Ella loved the romance and was desperately trying to keep a good view of all the “kissing parts”, it was WAY too much for Evan who would say “Oh no!” and put his head in his hands or make a bad face each time the mushy stuff would come around.

And… It’s always nice to see friends and acquaintances. There were so many beautiful people, lovely families!

Congratulations to the beautiful couples and long live love!
